What you can copy, and what you can't.

Journal essays — Creative Commons BY-NC 4.0

Every essay in the Pattern Journal is published under Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial 4.0 International (CC-BY-NC 4.0). That means teachers, learners, and curious humans can copy, remix, print, project, and translate the essays for non-commercial use — as long as you give attribution and link back to the original.

Copy this line and use it under any reproduced essay or print pack:

“[Essay title]” by Maths & Patterns, licensed under CC-BY-NC 4.0. Original at mathandpatterns.com/blog/.

What CC-BY-NC means in practice

• Yes — print 30 copies for your classroom.
• Yes — project the essay during a lesson.
• Yes — translate it into your local language for your students.
• Yes — quote a paragraph in a school newsletter, with attribution.
• No — paid coaching products or tutoring subscriptions that resell the essay as their core content.
• No — paid printed workbooks for sale.
• No — training a commercial AI model on the journal corpus.

The app, the website code, the brand

The Geo app (game code, UI, artwork), the marketing website source code, the Geo logo, the brand name, and the iconography are NOT under CC-BY-NC. They are proprietary and all rights are reserved. You may use the app under the limited personal permission described in our Terms of Service. You may not redistribute, decompile, or rebrand the app or the site.

Patches, ideas, and pull requests

We don't currently accept outside pull requests, but we welcome bug reports and ideas — email akash@chaitonix.com. Any code or text you send becomes a non-exclusive contribution we can use without owing you a credit, unless we explicitly agree otherwise in writing.

Trademark

“Maths & Patterns” and the Geo wordmark are unregistered trademarks. Please don't use them in a way that suggests we made or endorsed something we didn't. Fair-use references in reviews, teaching materials, or news coverage are always fine.
